GATEKEEPER’S LODGE, MEMBURY

Originally, this had been a potting shed at the entrance to the main house. The planners had opposed our plan for a butler’s cottage for containing more than one bedroom, on the grounds that it would have increased the traffic in the area. An outraged parish counsellor attended the planning meeting and said that he would happily lie in the road for half an hour to prove that it was hardly a busy area. We got the bedrooms.
