HOUSE NEAR ROSS-ON-WYE
This 18th century farm house had been extended in the 1950s, but was somewhat spoilt by a granolithic concrete staircase giving direct access from the kitchen wing to basement garages under the original drawing room. The landscape designer Tom Stuart-Smith suggested raising the ground and burying the basement, and fortunately the planner agreed. A notable improvement was the introduction of sash windows to the breakfast room, which could be raised sufficiently into the wall above to give egress for the six foot six client.
