HOUSE NEAR NEWMARKET
My long-term client bought this house because of the views, accommodation and mature garden. However, when I visited to measure I quickly realised that a small Georgian mansion had been hidden behind the Arts & Crafts bay windows and the peculiar porch arrangement. The conservation officer had to be convinced to let us take down the bay windows. Only when we did this did we find that they were causing serious structural movement, which had to be rectified. We demolished a 1950s two-storey wing to create a new kitchen/utility with bathroom and dressing rooms above. The original staircase had been removed and not one single original window had survived. We were however able to re-use most of the doors, and we even revealed some 18th.c. panelling, which had been hidden by later building works.
